New PlayStation Patent Could Make Controller Buttons Harder or Softer Based on Gameplay

PlayStation is continuing to explore new ways to make gaming more immersive, as shown by the various patents Sony has registered.

Many of these ideas focus on the DualSense controller, which already includes haptic feedback and other advanced features. Previous concepts have included turning your smartphone into the controller.

Now, a newly published PlayStation patent filed through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) takes things a step further. The patent describes a controller with dynamic-touch buttons that can adjust based on what is happening in the game.

PlayStation Explores Dynamic Controller Buttons That Change Feel in Real Time

The patent, titled “Operation Device, Information Processing Apparatus, Control Method Thereof, and Program”, outlines a system in which the controller’s buttons and analog sticks could become harder or softer depending on the gaming experience.

In other words, the buttons would change their resistance in real time. For example, if a player is moving through a swamp or climbing a mountain, the buttons or sticks could become softer. They could also become harder when a game wants to create a more challenging or realistic feeling. The system could be used in many different ways.

According to the patent, this could be achieved through a special material known as a magneto viscoelastic elastomer. If the buttons are made from this material, their hardness and elasticity can change depending on the strength of a magnetic field.

The patent description states, “The operating device can dynamically change the hardness of the contact portion in response to external control commands. Therefore, the information processing device can change the hardness of the contact portion in real time”

The patent also suggests that the technology could improve grip. Buttons could soften slightly so that fingers press deeper into them, or become firmer to create a different feeling.

“The information processing device hardens the contact area when the user character controlled by the user touches a hard object or moves on hard ground. Conversely, when the user character touches a soft object or moves on muddy ground such as a swamp, the contact area softens.”

One of the most interesting aspects of the patent is that it could also be used to improve accessibility for players. However, as is often the case with patents, the technology remains only a concept for now, and there is no guarantee that it will ever become a real product.
