New Sony Patent Could Turn Your Phone Into a DualSense Controller
With the PS5 DualSense controller, Sony already improved on the older DualShock design by adding new features like haptic feedback. Later, the company released the DualSense Edge and updated versions of the controller. However, many people are now wondering what Sony is planning for the future, especially with PS6.
One of the ideas being explored is attaching a mobile phone directly to the controller.
Sony Explores DualSense Controller That Uses a Smartphone for New Features

The patent, called “Input System”, was shared by Cheat Happens. It describes a system where a smartphone can be connected to the PlayStation controller and work as a second device.
The phone would add new ways to control games. It could use its own features, such as the touchscreen, motion sensors, camera, and virtual buttons, to send commands. The goal is to expand what the traditional controller can do.
The connection between the phone and the controller would be done using a magnetic attachment, allowing both devices to work together as one system.
According to the patent, the smartphone could act as the main device in some situations, while the controller would still remain the main physical interface.
The system could use the phone’s gyroscope, camera, and position sensors to create new gameplay actions. For example, players could move the device physically, scan objects, or interact using the touchscreen.
Another idea is to use the phone as a second screen. It could show maps or extra menus, helping to keep the main screen cleaner.
The patent also mentions features like creating avatars using the camera, improving environment detection with sensors, and showing extra information during gameplay.
It is still unclear whether this idea is meant for the current PlayStation generation or for the future PS6, which is rumored to launch in 2028 or 2029.
There is also the possibility that this is just an experimental idea that may never become a real product. Still, it opens the door to new types of controllers, possibly even one with a built-in screen in the future.
In related news, another patent registered by Sony suggests that the company is exploring the idea of personalized podcasts on PS5, hosted by PlayStation characters.

This is not a new idea from Sony. They PS4 allowed you to use your smartphone as a controller, keyboard, mouse. Personally I find it rather cluncky, for the same reasons people use controllers for their phone games.
