The next console generation may not arrive as soon as many players expect. Even though the PS5 is selling very well and the Switch 2 is already on the market, both Sony and Nintendo could be adjusting their long-term plans.

The PS5 has been a strong success, with more than 92 million units sold worldwide. Still, there are signs that Sony may extend its life cycle. Ongoing RAM shortages and the rising cost of developing large AAA games are making hardware production and game creation more expensive than before.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony is considering delaying the launch of the PlayStation 6 until 2028 or even 2029. If true, this would mean the PS6 will not arrive in 2027 as some had expected. Sony may believe that the PS5 is still in the middle of its life cycle and does not need to be replaced soon.

So far, there is no indication that this possible delay would lead to a price increase for the PS5 or PS5 Pro. Nintendo, however, may take a different approach.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been on the market for about a year and has already sold more than 17 million units. It is performing very well and could even surpass the original Switch in the future.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said that there are no current plans to raise the price of the Switch 2. However, he also noted that the company is watching market conditions closely, especially due to the RAM shortage.

Bloomberg reports that Nintendo is considering a possible price increase in 2026. Rather than applying a direct price hike, the company could make smaller changes to how it sells the console. For example, it might remove bundle offers such as including Mario Kart World in the $499.99 package.

Bloomberg has contacted both Sony and Nintendo for official comments, but neither company has confirmed the reports so far. As we get more information, we’ll make sure to keep you guys informed here at MP1st.
