Official PlayStation Magazine UK Runs Last Issue, Marks the End of Officially Branded Mags

opm uk Final Issue

Are you a fan of gaming magazines? Back in the day, when there was no Twitter, Reddit, gaming forums, and gaming websites (such as this one) wasn’t the norm, gaming magazines was the primary source of gaming info. Today, another gaming rag has bit the dust, and it’s none other than the Official PlayStation Magazine UK (OPM UK).

OPM UK launched its first issue back in 2006, which marks this year, as the end of its 15-year run. There was a US counterpart to OPM UK, though that magazine (OPM) stopped running as early as 2012. The last “official” magazine that closed shop before OPM UK was the Official Xbox Magazine, which ran its last issue in April 2020, while Nintendo’s official magazine ran its last issue in October of 2016.

However, all is not lost. OPM UK is closing shop, but its staff will be pushing through with a new magazine called “Play” that will be compromised of the old guard. My guess is, Sony simply didn’t sign the dotted line when it came to using the “Official” name again, or Future (the parent company of OPM UK), simply didn’t want to continue paying license fees to Sony. Either way, it’s an end of an era.

If you’ve ever read a gaming mag, pour one out for the last official one! As someone who has a soft spot for gaming magazines, this is a sad event, though one that might be inevitable. But who knows, right? Maybe gaming magazines will start getting big again. I, for one, would like that.
