Phil Spencer: Microsoft Intends to Treat Call of Duty Franchise Like Minecraft; Wants It on Every Device

With Microsoft’s on-going acquisition of Activison-Blizzard still up in the air, most non-Xbox gamers’ biggest fear (and probably Sony’s too) is that the Call of Duty franchise will be locked to Xbox platforms once the deal is finalized. While Sony has let the cat out of the bag in terms of what Microsoft had planned initially, it seems Xbox boss Phil Spencer is reiterating that they want to see the franchise on every platform imaginable, and even made comparisons to Minecraft — a Microsoft-published game that’s available on every platform imaginable currently.

Speaking in the Wall Street Journal Live event on the Metaverse, Spencer comments that he’d love to see the Call of Duty franchise on Switch, and on so many “different screens.”

Call of Duty specifically will be available on PlayStation. I’d love to see it on the Switch, I’d love to see the game playable on many different screens. Our intent is to treat CoD like Minecraft.

This opportunity is really about mobile for us. When you think about 3 billion people playing video games, there’s only about 200 million households on console.

While I don’t doubt that Spencer is being truthful that he wants to see the COD franchise on every screen imaginable, the question here is: for how long? Will Microsoft let every yearly iteration of Call of Duty appear on PlayStation consoles forever? I gather, that’s also Sony’s big question now, too.

In related news, Microsoft has launched a landing page touting the benefits all gamers will get if the Microsoft and Activison-Blizzard deal pushes through.

Thanks, Tom Warren!
