PlayStation Aims to Entice PC Gamers to Play Single-Player Sequels on Consoles; Live Service Titles to Release Simultaneously on PC & PS5
While Helldivers 2 was released day and date on both PS5 and PC, don’t expect single-player narrative-driven games to be released in the same boat by Sony anytime soon.
This was confirmed by PlayStation’s soon-to-be co-CEO Hermen Hulst in Sony’s business segment presentation.
Indeed, we are bringing our titles to the PC platform. We have a dual approach here: On the live service side, we are releasing our titles simultaneously, so day and date on PlayStation 5 and PC. But with our tentpole titles, our single-player, narrative-driven titles that are (as you can see in the presentation) the backbone of what PlayStation Studios has delivered in recent years and in our history, we take a more strategic approach, and we introduce our great franchises to new audiences, and we’re finding new audiences that are potentially going to be very interested in playing for example, sequels on the PlayStation platform. We have high hopes that we are actually able to bring new players into PlayStation at large but into PlayStation platforms specifically.
As you can see from Hulst’s statement, it seems moving forward, we can expect live service games made by PlayStation Studios to be released simultaneously on PS5 and PC, but for the single-player games, that won’t be the case.
Mind, I don’t know how easy it is to entice PC players with their powerful gaming hardware to plunk down $500 on a technically weaker system, but what do I know? Also, perhaps Sony’s data shows how some PC players might be willing to part the dough just to play the latest single-player PlayStation game at launch.
As for what’s next for the PS5, Sony has a new State of Play airing this May 30, where we’re hoping to see newly announced titles for the console.
