PlayStation Plus Loses 1.9 Million Subscribers Since Its Relaunch in June

PlayStation Plus Subscribers

In its latest earnings call, Sony revealed that PlayStation Plus lost a staggering 1.9 million subscribers between July and September of 2022, just a month after its relaunch in June 2022. The latest numbers show that the number of people subscribing to Sony’s subscription service fell to 45.4 million from 47.3 million.

This happened after Sony started offering tiers into their subscription service to compete with Xbox’s Game Pass. However, despite the number of PlayStation Plus members unsubscribing, the company’s network service revenue, which consists of the PS Plus revenue, grew 10%. This might be the case due to many people subscribing to the highest PS Plus tiers, and paying more each month.

Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Hiroki Totoki said that the momentum for the service hasn’t been great. The CFO also claimed that by promoting the PlayStation Plus service and its tiers in a better fashion, they will be able to recover the lost subscribers.

Moreover, Sony revealed that its MAU (monthly active users) have gone down from 103 million to 102 million, which isn’t that bad, given the increase in network services, but it’s not good either.

All in all, it wasn’t the best quarter for Sony when it comes to subscription services as the CFO says that “more people going outdoors” has affected the number of PS Plus users. But, given that Modern Warfare 2 had its biggest launch on PlayStation, and with God of War Ragnarok is just around the corner, things might just turn out fine in Sony’s next financial quarter.
