PS5 Animated Backgrounds

If you missed the animated wallpapers on the PS4, Sony seems to be bringing it back, though without much fanfare, as some PS5 owners are stating they are now seeing animated backgrounds on their console’s Welcome tab.

There is no file to download and no new firmware update to install, as this seems to be something Sony can do remotely. Chances are that the latest PS5 system update installed whatever data Sony needed to trigger this.

PS5 Gamers Pleasantly Surprised With New Animated Backgrounds Feature

Twitter/X user chi_m02 got the feature on their PS5 and took screenshots of it (seen above). Players can change their background to different first-party PlayStation titles. Other PS5 owners have also confirmed of this new feature, though some have mentioned how they are able to see Astro Bot as the lone new animated background for now.

There’s no word on how Sony decides which users gets what background for now, though we’re hoping more clarification about this will be made in the near future.

If we had to hazard a guess, this new background feature will be a global roll out much like the classic PlayStation themes we got in December last year.

Hopefully, this means we’ll have fully customizable wallpapers for the PS5 in the near future. Perhaps we’ll see third-party makers start selling these much like the PS4. I remember buying a few of the premium PS4 animated wallpapers before, and I don’t regret it one bit.

Last month, Sony announced a new beta program for PS5 and PC gamers where they can test new features, so expect more new stuff to be added to the PS5’s system in the future.
