Rainbow Six Siege PS5 and Xbox Series X Confirmed, Crossplay and Cross-Gen Planned

Rainbow Six Siege Update 2.23

With Rainbow Six Siege already in its fifth year since it launched, it seems Ubisoft has no intention of letting the game die anytime soon, even if we’re on the cusp of the next-generation of gaming with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Those wondering, Ubisoft has just confirmed a Rainbow Six Siege PS5 and Xbox Series X versions as well!

Game Director Leroy Athanassof has confirmed that Rainbow Six Siege PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will be available on day one — whenever that might be.

Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles. What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.

While that is already good news for Rainbow Six Siege players, Ubisoft has more good stuff planned, and that’s with the integration of both crossplay and cross-generation play! This means that Ubisoft is targeting PS4/XB1 Rainbow Six Siege players to be able to play with PS5/Xbox Series X players at the same time!

Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.

Unfortunately though, Rainbow Six Siege crossplay is just being planned between consoles, and not for consoles and PC.

I don’t think there will ever be console cross-play with PC. The only way we could do that kind of stuff is by letting you do that if you want to. By default, you’re always with console. But if you want to match with these players, to have better matchmaking, or whatever, and get your ass kicked by a keyboard and mouse, up to you.

Lastly, Ubisoft is also looking into offering cross-platform progression as well, which means your Rainbow Six Siege progress on one platform (say the PS4) can be transferred to another (PC, XB1).

While Ubisoft has no timetable on the cross-play and other stuff planned, the fact that they’ve gone public with these plans means that the game has a long life ahead of it. Mind, it’s not that surprising given we just had our first look at Operation Void Edge’s new Operators, and even upcoming changes.
