Report: Marvel’s Avengers to Cease Updates and Development as Devs Work on New Tomb Raider Game

Marvel's Avengers

Crystal Dynamics is finally pulling the plug on Marvel’s Avengers if a recent rumor is to be believed. The live service Marvel game didn’t take off as well as a lot of people hoped it would, with publisher Square Enix confirming it underperformed sales-wise.

According to a new report by reliable Marvel insider Miller, Crystal Dynamics is said to have reallocated its remaining devs to focus on an upcoming Tomb Raider game. As a result, Marvel’s Avengers is set to sunset sometime this year, with reports mentioning that development of the game will stop as early as next week. It will still receive a few updates, such as an upgrade to the game’s player traversal system and the removal of time gating, but other than that, it looks like the game’s being put down.

As Marvel’s Avengers wasn’t a huge success by any means, one can only hope that the upcoming Tomb Raider game will showcase the true talents of Crystal Dynamics when not held back by what former devs claimed as “inept studio management and Marvel Games bureaucracy.”

If this rumor is true, then this means that The Winter Soldier will be the last free hero released for the game. Same as with any rumor, treat this one with a grain of salt until announcements are made by Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics.
