Report: PS5 Stock Sells Out in China Following Black Myth: Wukong Launch
Sony’s PlayStation 5 is reportedly selling out rapidly across China, fueled by the successful release of Black Myth: Wukong. The highly anticipated action RPG, based on Chinese mythology, has caused a surge in demand for the console, with reports of widespread stock shortages.
According to Daniel Camilo, retailers at Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen are struggling to keep up with the demand. The console, which was once readily available, is now being sold at inflated prices by scalpers, with the price increasing from 2,000 yuan to as high as 4,000 yuan in some instances.
A local stall owner said (translated from Chinese to English via Google Translate:
Black Myth: Wukong fire up, the basic spot has been swept away, and now the whole Huaqiang North should not have PS5 spot, even if there is, the price you certainly can not afford.
Black Myth: Wukong has not only boosted PS5 sales but also achieved remarkable success across all platforms. In just three days, the game sold 10 million units and reached a peak of three million concurrent users. Additionally, pre-orders for the game amounted to 4.5 million copies, generating over $210 million in sales.
Its popularity in China has significantly impacted the availability of PS5 consoles, leading to a rare instance of stock shortages in the country.
Black Myth: Wukong launched on August 20 for PlayStation 5 and PC, with the Xbox Series X|S launch temporarily postponed.
