Report: Sea of Thieves PS5 Sales Surpass 1 Million
Sea of Thieves, the pirate-themed game from Rare, has reportedly surpassed one million copies sold on the PlayStation 5. This milestone comes shortly after the game’s release on Sony’s console in April 2024.
Jez Corden of Windows Central states:
Indeed, trusted sources have indicated to me that Sea of Thieves has crossed a million sales on PlayStation since its launch over there, and is most likely higher still since this information came to me.
While Rare has yet to officially confirm these figures, Sea of Thieves topped the PS5 download charts in May, further highlighting its strong performance on the platform.
Prior to its PS5 release, Sea of Thieves had already been a hit on Xbox and PC, with over 40 million players reported. The game’s success on PS5 reflects the growing trend of Xbox titles finding new audiences on PlayStation platforms. The release also forms part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand its reach across different platforms, a move that has seen other titles like Grounded and Hi-Fi Rush also ported to PlayStation.
If this sales number is true, then Microsoft’s decision to bring some of its games to competing platforms is the right move. I mean, revenue trumps console exclusivity for a lot of companies — and Microsoft is clearly one of them. The latest Xbox game heading to PS5? It’s none other than Bethesda’s Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which has been confirmed to be hitting the PS5 in Spring 2025.
Sea of Thieves is currently available on multiple platforms, including PS5, Xbox, and PC via Steam.
