Last year, we reported on gameplay details and screens for The Initiative’s Perfect Dark reboot, which was unfortunately canned by Microsoft.

Today. we unearthed more about the project and its actual gameplay. We see the weapons in action, and we even see new zones that, from our knowledge, have not been seen before.

If you’re a Perfect Dark fan, this will make the cancellation sting even more.

Perfect Dark Reboot Gameplay Surfaces

The footage below comes from VFX artist Tracey Landau, who has over 10 years of experience working on various gaming franchises such as Marvel’s Avengers, Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, and more. You can see some of the weapons being shown off, as well as the traversal and level design as well in the two-minute gameplay clip.

Unfortunately, this is as close as we’ll get to the game, which was canceled last year. In our report, the documentation revealed that The Initiative was working on the game’s Vertical Slice 1 since April 2025. For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a playable proof-of-concept that represents the game’s quality and overall experience.

The rumor was that this Perfect Dark reboot was planned to be in episodic format, which we honestly didn’t know whether it would fly then or now.

Per a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, there was almost a chance that the Perfect Dark reboot could have lived on, as Take-Two Interactive (parent company of Rockstar Games) was in talks with Microsoft and Embracer to finance the game, but as we know now, things didn’t work out as intended, which led to the game’s complete cancellation.

Time will tell whether Microsoft has plans for the IP. Perhaps with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, the property will get another chance to prove itself. If so, it’ll have to be from another developer, as The Initiative, led by Daryl Gallagher (formerly of Crystal Dynamics) and established in 2018, was closed by Microsoft in July 2025 as part of a corporate restructuring.

While the Xbox division’s reset has resulted in a bunch of studio closures so far, it also meant more console exclusives for the platform, and even taking a bold chance to fund Hideo Kojima’s espionage game, Physint. Who knows? Maybe Perfect Dark will see the light of day under another first-party studio.
