Rumor: Sony Reportedly Reconsidering Delaying Digital-Only Plans Due to Xbox Pushing for “100% Physical” Strategy for Project Helix
Much has been said about Sony’s announcement that they are pulling back from physical game releases for PlayStation on January 2028. Gamers have called for a blackout, but even then, Sony has said they are proceeding cautiously with their plans.
Now, for the first time ever, a rumor has surfaced stating that Sony might be reconsidering its digital-only plans — at least its timing.
The reason? All due to the competition, more specifically, Microsoft’s alleged Xbox strategy.
Sony Is Said to be Delaying Disc-Free Plans Due to Competitors
In a recent podcast by Eurogamer Spain, they mention a few key things they’ve heard about PlayStation and Xbox at the Gamescom show floor.
Take note that these are unverified rumors, and as such, should be treated with a grain of salt.
Our translation mentions, “that there’s a growing feeling that the December 31, 2028 deadline might be pushed back by one or two years.”
Why? All because of Xbox and Project Helix, and how Sony is afraid Xbox might capitalize on their disc-free fans to gain support from gamers and even game makers too.
That rumor is taking shape because different publishers are bringing it up, and above all because it seems, and here comes another rumor that’s been circulating… that PlayStation has realized it is leaving an opening for other market players to shift their strategy.
And that these players could take advantage of this situation regarding the demand for, or complaints about, physical formats to change their philosophy moving forward.
Among them is Microsoft. The word around here is that Microsoft is speaking internally with all publishers, stating that their next console will be “100% physical”, with the ability to convert your physical games into digital ones. It is being said that Microsoft is telling developers that Project Helix, their upcoming console, will be entirely physical.
With Microsoft’s recent announcement of their disc-to-digital initiative kicking off later this month, I wouldn’t be surprised if this rumor is the real deal.
This is the second rumbling of Sony getting some sort of pushback from game makers regarding their disc-free plans. One report we ran today noted tension on the Gamescom show floor, affecting marketing and third-party support.
The rumor doesn’t stop there. It also mentions how Sony was also approached by a “major” game maker about its “massive title,” and how if Sony can’t promise a physical release, this major game maker (which was said isn’t Rockstar), will skip releasing on PlayStation and just release the title on Microsoft and Nintendo’s platforms.
Aside from the fact that it wouldn’t make sense for this mystery company to be Rockstar due to existing marketing agreements and logistics, it’s really interesting to see the rumbles of shifting strategies going against PlayStation.
Only time will tell if Sony ultimately bends the knee and moves in a direction where we could see a few more major titles getting physical copies after all.

Honestly Xbox is still crap, Sony being crap too doesn’t change that. Just but a PC.
PC gaming is horrible and not worth it. Games are made for consoles and poorly ported to PC. PC gaming is dead.
Can a PS controller connect to an Xbox? Asking for a friend.
> Why? All because of Xbox and Project Helix, and how Sony is afraid Xbox might capitalize on their disc-free PLANS to gain support from gamers and even game makers too.
If Xbox gets a disc drive and keeps physical alive, well I will go back to them if they can make good games. Or get them, done with anything Sony or Taketwo for sure.
I really think that is Microsoft’s only play right now. It’s such a massive amount of goodwill they would receive if they went physical for the project Helix. Microsoft could actually do this is how you share games when they announce it. Could you imagine? I know wishful thinking, but I think it’s bullshit whar Sony’s trying to pull here.
Let’s hope they change their minds 🤞
“100% physical strategy for Xbox”…ARE YOU MENTAL? In what reality?
From the company that pushes subscription gaming like no other and “adorably all digital”. Fake news!
Delaying it won’t bring you anymore of my money, pledging to keep physical around for the next generation and beyond might but I want a fully backwards compatible console and then I’ll probably buy a ps6
Sorry, but this rumor is 100% false and Microsoft is also moving towards Digital only. Their push of physical to digital is to get people used to digital. Even Nintendo is going all digital by 2028.
Physical game sales still account for a significant share (40%) of Nintendo’s business. It seems unlikely they would dare to take that step in 2028—especially considering the fierce backlash they faced from their own customers when they introduced game key cards.
Bullshit until it’s real.
Im switching to Xbox, I will not pay for a game I do not own.
Probably too little too late now that they’ve really fired up thier consumer market after disrespecting them over and over again. I wonder how much more they’ll put up with but I can all but promise that the ps6 sales will suffer because of it
Yeah. After Sony’s stupid decision to end physical game disks, getting the next X-box is the only next viable option for me. They are at least showing that they care for what WE want. Or at least just smart enough to run the business for the sake of staying paid. I guess I should’ve know that in the cold light of day, it was always eventually gonna come down to Microsoft being the knight in shining armor. I’m not ever gonna pay for something so someone can look me in the internet and tell me it’s not mine. Seriously! I’ll ride my PS5 Until it’s over. Then that’s it. Sony may as well just taken a crap on their own front porch. It was good while it lasted for 30 years.
