Shuhei Yoshida, the former president of Sony Worldwide Studios and a key figure in PlayStation’s history, recently commented on Microsoft’s recent shift in gaming strategy and the arrival of Xbox games on the PS5. He called this change a “win” for PlayStation owners, saying it is a big benefit for them.

In a recent interview on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast (behind a paywall on Patreon), Yoshida explained that he thinks Microsoft has become the “biggest publisher for PlayStation” because of the low sales of Xbox consoles and Microsoft’s focus on software and cloud services.

Microsoft Is the Biggest Publisher on PlayStation, Says Shuhei Yoshida Shuhei Yoshida

Yoshida shared, “I suspect Microsoft is the biggest publisher on PlayStation,” laughing. “Looking at the install base of Xbox, I think it’s natural to understand what they’re doing.”

He noted that Microsoft has shifted its focus from selling Xbox hardware to expanding Game Pass, aiming to make it available on all devices, much like Office 365 has expanded to mobile devices and Macs.

“Microsoft looks like it’s been shifting its focus to Game Pass, which perhaps comes from the DNA of the company,” Yoshida said. “They’re a software company; a cloud company. So, their products, like Office 365, are available everywhere – on Mac, on mobile, on Windows. They are probably hoping Game Pass will be available everywhere in the future.”

“I think it’s a win for PlayStation owners. They’re going to access to games they didn’t previously have access to,” Yoshida added.

In other news, Shuhei Yoshida was forced by Jim Ryan to focus on indie games instead of first-party titles, with the alternative being to leave the company.
