Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic’s Director Assure Fans Game Will Be Out Before 2030
One of the biggest reveals at this year’s The Game Awards is undoubtedly Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a spiritual successor to the Knights of the Old Republic, which is being spearheaded by Casey Hudson — a former BioWare big dog who directed the previous games and even the highly-regarded Mass Effect trilogy.
With the announcement, RPG and Star Wars fans are eagerly awaiting any news about it, and of course, when it will be released.
While there’s no official timetable or schedule when it will see the light of day, it’ll be sometime before 2030, according to Hudson.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Release Won’t Be as Far Out as 2030
The peculiar year of 2030 was brought up by renowned investigative journalist Jason Schreier on bluesky. According to Schrier, Fate of the Old Republic might be a PS7 (!) title.
Schreier states, “Last night’s biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game.”
Now, before everyone gets super bummed out, Hudson went on X to debunk this, stating, “Don’t worry about the “not till 2030” rumors. Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!”
There are two sides to this story; while Hudson is obviously more familiar with the development process, Schreir isn’t entirely wrong. We’ve seen games get announced, only to be stuck in development hell and never see the light of day. You don’t even need to look far for an example. At the 2021 The Game Awards, Warner Bros. announced a game based on Wonder Woman. After years of silence, the company annunced the project’s cancellation earlier this year.
We’re hoping Fate of the Old Republic won’t see the same, uh, fate, but it is too early to say that it won’t get delayed. And until Hudson gives a specific release window, I wouldn’t expect the game to be released anytime soon. The big question here is: will it even be reeleased on the PS5/Xbox Series era of consoles? If the project is very early on, I wouldn’t count on it.
Aside from Fate of the Old Republic, another Star Wars game recently announced is Star Wars Galactic Racers, and this one is launching a lot sooner, as it’s set for release in 2026 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
