Just three weeks ago, a report stated that the Wonder Woman game was being rebooted and was “years away” from seeing the light of day. As it turns out, that was being generous, as the game is now officially cancelled.

Not only that, but Warner Bros. Games is also shutting down three studios as well.

Warner Bros, Games Confirms “Strategic Change in Direction”

The news was first reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier who obtained an internal memo. According to it, not only is the Wonder Woman game cancelled, but three studios: Monolith Productions (Shadow of Mordor), Player First Games (MultiVersus) and Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

In a statement, Warner Bros. Games has confirmed the news, stating (via shinobi), “We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises — Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them. The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”

This announcement further adds to this year’s bloodbath regarding the game’s industry’s job security. We’re two months in, and there are already multiple studio closures, layoffs and more.

Warner Bros. Games’ massive movements in their gaming division are in response to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s disappointing reception and MultiVersus’s failure to retain its player base, which led to the announcement that the game is shutting down.

Aside from a report about Hogwarts Legacy DLC and a sequel, the only good news we have from Warner Bros. Games is that Rocksteady Studios seems to be working on a new single-player Batman game, as their recent job listing reveals.

The WW game could have been cool if it released 10 years ago and followed the same structure as that cool Captain America game we got way back on PS3. WW just going level to level (open world would have sucked) kicking ass on battlefields or in smaller base camps and fighting Ares (mustached version please) as the final boss.

Not all games need to be open world and full of a million side quests and things to do. WW would have thrived as a single player level based experience. So I’m glad it was cancelled because what the devs were cooking was obviously too much and would have been a ton of mediocre events strung together.
