GUNNAR Optiks Cyberpunk 2077 DEX Review – Looking Like the Future

In case you missed the news, GUNNAR Optiks has teamed up with CD Projekt Red to deliver on yet another collaboration. Though this time we won’t be hunting down monsters as Witchers, but instead, we’ll be stepping into the neon-drenched streets of Night City. That’s right, GUNNAR’s latest collaboration is with the world of Cyberpunk 2077!

Fans of the game will no doubt recognize who GUNNAR Optiks is basing these newest glasses on, as they’re based on the very fixer who gave V their start: the legendary Dexter DeShawn.

Upgrade Yourself With Some Cyberware

Right off the bat, for those out of the loop or not big on video games, the glasses probably look a bit odd. Understandably, since most glasses and their lenses are rounded and separated, whereas GUNNAR Optiks’ Cyberpunk 2077 DEX frame is more square and rectangular, with the lens a single piece. But even if you aren’t a fan or know nothing about it, there’s no denying that these glasses do look like something out of a sci-fi flick. Whether that’s a thing you want to chase is up to you, but as someone who is a fan of the Cyberpunk franchise, GUNNAR has knocked it out of the park with these, as they really do look like they were lifted right out of the game itself.

In terms of comfort, I’ve never worn a shield-style pair of glasses before. My first thought was that it might feel a bit uncomfortable, but surprisingly, it isn’t. With the amber tint and the brushed-nickel framing, it felt like I was putting on something from the future, which, given that this is Cyberpunk 2077, yeah, you would want that.

Now, I may not be someone who would wear these out in public (I just don’t have the clothes to match!), but besides the standard glasses (which also support custom prescription), you can also get these ordered as dark-tinted glasses.

Regardless of which version of the DEX you get, GUNNAR has put quite an amount of attention to detail to capture the Fixer’s iconic glasses. Of course, there are a few things, like the little rounded silver bits around the frame that are not present in-game. But even so, I think it adds even more to the glasses, almost as if the glasses themselves have cyberware implants.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t come with a hard case like The Witcher glasses did. Considering how premium these actually look and feel, I’m surprised they didn’t opt for a hard case to keep them safe. Instead, you get a padded puffy sleeve, which on its own does look great. Pictures don’t do it justice; all it looks like is a black sleeve with the Cyberpunk 2077 logo on it, but it has a reflective sheen.

I would have loved to see GUNNAR make a Cyberpunk 2077-style glasses case (what would that even look like?), but what they did with the sleeve is still nice.

The biggest surprise to me, though, is that GUNNAR Optiks could have easily charged a ridiculous amount of money for these. Obviously, once you get into the prescription that changes, but at a base price of $125, it does feel fairly priced for what definitely feels like a collector’s item. Not the cheaply made one, either, that you see packaged with a video game that costs over $250.

Of course, the DEX glasses offer a lot more than turning you into a resident of Night City. Blue light-blocking technology built into them means you can stare at a PC screen for a whole lot longer while potentially avoiding the eye strain that comes with it. They look good, feel good, and they help with your vision.

Overall, I’m impressed. I mean, I already was impressed by GUNNAR Optiks with The Witcher glasses, but to see them essentially recreate, and faithfully, a pair of glasses that were featured in Cyberpunk 2077? I was expecting something simpler, with some branding here and there, rather than actually bringing those glasses to life. They look fantastic and stunning enough to make me want to put them up on display, like on a shelf or behind a glass display or something. I know they’re meant for wearing, but being a big fan of the franchise, I really do love how these look.

Here’s hoping we see even more of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe from GUNNAR, because if this is what they got for us right out of the gate, then I’m definitely excited to see where they go next.

  • Really does feel and look like the glasses from Cyberpunk 2077
