GUNNAR Optiks Fallout Lucky 38 Review – Feeling Lucky?
Amazon’s Fallout collaboration with GUNNAR Optiks continues with an all-new pair of glasses! Inspired by Amazon’s Fallout TV series, the Fallout Lucky 38 will have you looking like you just came out of the wasteland, while protecting your eyes from some radioactive waves.
OK. Not literally radioactive, but they do protect you from some harmful blue light, while giving you the fashion sense of a wastelander.
Going All In
Season 2 of Amazon’s Fallout TV series has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean that the fun has to end. While we know that Fallout 5 is in pre-production, with remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas in the works, there’s plenty for Fallout fans to look forward to in the upcoming future.
But that’ll all come later, not sooner, and for those wanting something right now to make your Fallout experience even better, we have something for you: the Fallout Lucky 38 glasses. Channeling the suave, pre-war casino elegance of New Vegas with a brushed metal aesthetic and removable leather side shields, these frames bridge the gap between high-end wasteland collectibles and serious digital eye protection.
I’m not one for the rounded-lens look. Just never been too big of a fan of them, but I will say in the case of the Lucky 38 glasses by GUNNAR, they’ve certainly put a pretty cool spin on it to make it fit right into the Fallout universe.
They almost remind me more of goggles, instead of glasses, with the shielded leather sides, something I can imagine a wasteland survivor wearing. Almost Mad Max-like if I’m honest, but being that this is themed after Fallout New Vegas, the desert setting is a natural coincidence.
What I love is how the leather brings out the tint, a perfect contrast between the dark brown and amber coloring. The leather shields are completely removable for those who want something that blends in better with everyday use.
The frame is made of metal, and again, the leather shielding really brings out the circular shape of each frame, almost focusing in on them. There is some added weight with the shield, and I found these glasses slipping off more than I would have liked with those shields on. With them off, they do seem to hold in place a lot better.
There’s definitely a “casino” and wasteland feel to them with that leather addition. I know I keep bringing that up, but I really can’t help but smile at such a cool little addition.
The GUNNAR Lucky 38 look like glasses you would find someone wearing in Fallout, but I will say that’s not evidently clear in the real world if you wanted someone to know they’re from Fallout. That could be both a good and a bad thing, but I like the idea of wearing these without people knowing I’m a big video game nerd.
As for whatever you get in the box, you get a hard case and a soft cloth case, each with Fallout logos. The soft case and the cleaning cloth are more Fallout themed, featuring a chip from New Vegas and one of the Automatrons. The extra soft cloth case is a pretty nice surprise.
To protect your eyes from all that blue light (which isn’t radioactive) and sunlight, you can get these as normal glasses (prescription and with blue-light-blocking tech) or as sunglasses.
I’ve been using a pair of Gunnar glasses for months now, and I feel pretty good about their blue-light-blocking lenses. I work in front of a PC for usually eight or more hours. My eyes don’t strain as much as they used to, and I feel pretty great by the end of my shift, where I can jump right into playing video games. Of course, results will vary for everyone, but for me, I have definitely noticed a difference in the months of use.
I was a bit hesitant about the whole circular lenses. Never been much of a big fan of them, but I suppose all it takes is the right kind of frames, and in this case GUNNAR, and the right kind of collaboration, Fallout, to convince me otherwise. The GUNNAR Optiks Fallout Lucky 38 retails at a starting MSRP of $99, which for a collaborative piece ain’t all that bad.
