PS5 and PS4 Digital Games May Require 30-Day DRM Check-In or Risk Losing Access
PlayStation fans have been facing a new issue since this morning, which forces them to connect their consoles to the internet once every 30 days, or their digital game licences may be revoked, and they will be unable to access them for a temporary period.
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a system that controls access to digital games and content, often requiring online verification to confirm ownership. Lance McDonald shared this on X, where he posted information about a title showing 20 remaining days to connect to the internet, further stating that a highly controversial DRM has been rolled out to all PS4 and PS5 digital games, requiring an online check-in every 30 days.
PS4 & PS5 Games Need Monthly Online Check

As shared above (via Lance McDonald), many fans have faced this issue and expressed their frustration. McdDonald also shared multiple tweets on the X, revealing most of the information about it. A shocking point in his report was that the newly purchased digital games will require an online check-in every 30 days.
“Games you bought in the past seem not to have this issue, but any game you buy from now on will only work for 30 days without an online check-in”, his tweet states. Therefore, if you have games you bought a while ago, they would probably be safe. He also claimed that this can’t be avoided using “Activate console as primary.”
Sony hasn’t made any official announcement about this new update yet. However, a game preservation site, Does it Play? now claims that the PS5 and PS4 Digital Games DRM is an unintentional bug added by Sony while fixing an exploit.
While they didn’t reveal the source, they claim it’s an anonymous insider at Sony and state that Sony will make an official announcement soon to clear things up. We have also contacted PlayStation to find out whether this was intended and will update as soon as we hear from them.
Speaking of games, the PlayStation Store “Big Games, Big Deals” promotion is live, and it discounts a significant amount of new games.
