New 007 Games, Including First Light Sequel, Will Be Published Under Amazon Games
IO Interactive’s 007 First Light game has just been released, and there are already talks of a sequel happening. Though it seems there will be changes, specifically regarding who will be publishing,
IO developed First Light and also self-published it. Well, that’s changing with the game’s upcoming sequel, as it’ll be published under the Amazon Games banner.
But for now, it seems that IO Interactive will continue to be the developer.
Amazon Bought Control for the James Bond Franchise Last Year
With news that 007 First Light has surpassed 1.5 million in sales, a sequel is all but confirmed given its success. But despite IO Interactive being at the helm of the project, it looks like the future of the games will now all fall under Amazon Games.
For those who haven’t been paying attention to the news in the last year, Amazon recently gained control of the franchise. There was always going to be a hand-off of sorts, though, given that 007 First Light was announced years before that deal, the Hitman developers, IO Interactive, were able to keep their publishing deal for the game.
That’s all changing for the sequel, as well as any future 007 game, as the head of Amazon Games, Jeff Gattis, confirmed in a recent interview with Polygon that they will now be published under MGM (owned by Amazon) and, by extension, Amazon Games.
“We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP,” Gattis explains, “but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”
Do keep in mind that this does not mean that IO Interactive won’t be developing 007 games anymore. There’s no mention of whether that will be the case, but it would certainly be a massive mistake by Amazon if it chooses to move on from the franchise without IO Interactive. You can’t have this much success and suddenly decide to remove the reason for that success and expect things to go well.
But who knows, anything can happen. There are certainly perks to having a big publisher now backing the project, let’s just hope that Amazon allows IO Interactive to continue doing what they’ve been doing.
007 First Light is now available on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The Switch 2 version will be released soon. You can read up on our full 007 First Light review now to find out why it’s one of the best Bond games to ever release.
In related news, we recently reported that the budget for 007 First Light was $200 million and that it is considered Denmark’s most expensive entertainment project.
