Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5 Requires PlayStation Plus to Play Local Split-Screen
One of the best things in playing Halo’s campaign is taking out the Covenant with a friend. For those who plan to do that on PS5 in Halo: Campaign Evolved, you both better have an active PlayStation Plus membership if you want to do that.
Just to make it clear, this is for offline, local split-screen and it’s said to require an active PlayStation Plus membership, which honestly sounds a bit absurd.
This is something Halo Studios has confirmed in the latest community Q&A.
Halo: Campaign Evolved Requires PS+ and Even a Microsoft Account for Local Co-op
In a Q&A, the development team confirmed a few things when it comes to playing the game solo or with a friend. For the question, “Are there any XBOX account requirements to play the game solo or co-op?” the studio responded:
A: Yes, just as you do today for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite to ensure smooth cross-platform progression, to play Halo: Campaign Evolved you will need a Microsoft account and XBOX Gamertag, regardless of the platform(s) you play on. This enables both cross-platform play and cross-platform progression. A few additional items to keep in mind for launch day include:
- XBOX Series X|S: If you’re playing split-screen on an XBOX console, the second player will also need a unique Microsoft account. If you want to play online co-op, you will need an active XBOX Game Pass subscription.
- PlayStation 5®: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5®, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.
- Steam: If you’re playing via Steam, you will need to link to a Microsoft account.
The developers recommend that players create an Xbox account before the game’s release in July in order to be ready once the game is released.
We’re unsure whether this PlayStation Plus requirement is mandated by Sony or Microsoft, and we’ve reached out to both parties for clarification. If we get a response, we’ll update the article to let our readers know.
Is this a deal-breaker for you, or does it not matter since all your friends already have active PS+ subscriptions?
In related news, it seems the console war is once again in full swing, as Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO has outright confirmed that PlayStation single-player games will be PlayStation-exclusive, though multiplayer-focused titles will still see a PC release.
On the other side, Microsoft’s Xbox division has denied it will drop exclusivity on its games and even states that more are coming every year.
