Bethesda to Face Significant Overhaul, Focusing Only on Key Franchises Moving Forward
While Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has revealed the major beats of the division’s reset today, more info is coming out of the woodwork regarding the other first-party studios.
One major first-party studio that’s also being affected is Bethesda, which is reportedly undergoing an overhaul.
There are no layoffs announced for the company’s stable of studios and developers, but don’t expect smaller projects from them moving forward.
Bethesda’s Big Properties Will Be Its Only Focus Moving Forward
As part of the restructuring announcement, Bloomberg (pauywalled) has mentioned that ZeniMax, the parent company of Bethesda, is facing a “significant overhaul,” and will pivot its focus to the company’s biggest franchises such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Wolfenstein and Quake,
For those keeping tabs on everything Xbox, a report surfaced last month that mentioned how Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wanted speedier turnaround times for Fallout, The Elder Scrolls games, and this new mention of it further adds weight to it.
Mind, given how long Bethesda has developed its games, this was an inevitability. To put things in perspective, The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced back in 2018, and here we are, eight years later, with not even a single gameplay trailer to show for it.
We did get confirmation that the RPG is in a “playable” state in 2024, but no official announcement for it has happened since; not a screenshot, trailer, press release, nothing.
Does this mean Starfield is put on the back burner? Possibly so, but until we hear anything specific or official, fans of the sci-fi epic should remain vigilant.
This focus on Bethesda should be good news for gamers, right? Another bit of good news is, there should be more Xbox exclusives headed to console gamers in the near future, if Microsoft had its way.
