A Month After Launch, Valve Reportedly Sees Steam Machine as a Success
When Valve revealed that the new Steam Machine would cost more than $1,000, many people were surprised. The 512 GB version with a controller was priced at $1,128, leading many to question whether players would be willing to pay that much.
However, just one month after launch, Valve believes the compact gaming PC has been a success.
According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, the company is pleased with the results after selling every available unit to customers on the waiting list.
After a Failed Start in 2012, Steam Machine Is Reportedly Now a Success

Schreier shared this information in a recent video on his YouTube channel, where he looked back at Valve’s long journey to bring Steam Machine to the market.
He explained that Valve measures success differently from companies like Sony and Microsoft. Instead of trying to match PlayStation or Xbox in console sales, Valve’s goal has always been to strengthen its PC gaming ecosystem and expand SteamOS to different types of hardware.
“I think this thing has proven to be a success for them,” he added. “And that is because Valve’s goal here is not necessarily to make this hardware that sells millions and millions of units and competes with the PlayStation and the Xbox.”
According to Schreier, all the factors that led to the high price did not stop customers from buying the device. Every Steam Machine offered to people on the waiting list has been sold, whether it included a Steam Controller or not.
Schreier said the project is the result of work that began back in 2012, when Valve became concerned about the future of Windows. At that time, the company started exploring a Linux-based alternative with projects such as SteamOS, although those early efforts did not become as popular as Valve had hoped.
Even though Valve later stepped back from earlier promises of 4K gaming at 60 frames per second, the company has still managed to sell enough units for Steam Machine to be considered a success.
It remains to be seen whether Steam Machine can build on its early success in the coming months, especially as hardware prices often increase over time.
