Steam Machine has faced a difficult journey since its reveal. The system was originally expected to launch earlier this year, but the global component shortage forced Valve to delay those plans and push the release to mid-2026.

Now, after months of waiting, the Steam Machine is finally set to arrive before the end of this month.

However, while fans will soon be able to get their hands on the hardware, the launch comes with a major drawback: the price is far higher than many had anticipated.

Steam Machine Launches at Over $1,000

The official Steam Machine website has opened reservations, offering four different models:

  • Steam Machine 512 GB: $1,049
  • Steam Machine 512 GB + Steam Controller Bundle: $1,128
  • Steam Machine 2 TB: $1,349
  • Steam Machine 2 TB + Steam Controller Bundle: $1,428

Buyers will start receiving their Steam Machines from June 30. Valve has not said exactly when each order will arrive. Anyone who wants to buy one must join the reservation list before June 25 at 1:00 PM ET. After that, the list will close and the order of reservations will be chosen at random. Users will then receive an email with the result.

Also, Valve has openly acknowledged the issue that many players are already discussing: the price. In comments made to Eurogamer, the company admitted that the price is “significantly more” than we originally planned. “Our original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable,” said engineer Yazan Aldehayyat.

It’s also worth noting that the ongoing RAM supply crisis is expected to affect Steam Machine availability, with Valve confirming that stock levels will be lower than originally planned.

For now, we can only hope that Steam Machine becomes more affordable in the future and is readily available to genuine buyers rather than ending up in the hands of scalpers.
