Released in 2005, Battlefield 2 is widely considered to be one of the best entries in the franchise.

In 2014, the game’s servers were officially shut down alongside other GameSpy-powered games, though BF2 is still playable through mods and alternative servers.

Now, the first-person shooter classic might be making a major comeback soon, and might even get a ton more mods in the process too.

Battlefield 2 Open Source Project Almost Complete and Ready for Public Release

The modder has made an announcement on the “Back 2 Battlefield” Discord server alongside a trailer of the latest development on the project.

The source code for Battlefield 2, with “server full on par with retail,” and the client “close to full compatibility (works on most maps)” will be released soon. The modder says they have spent years on reverse-engineering BF2 in a way that it stays true to how it was created 20 years ago.

The game right now is in a playable state, and the server is 100% complete (64-bit Windows build). While there’s no date given, it’ll be shared on the Discord server and on GitHub, free of charge to players and server operators. The modder adds, “Everything is interchangeable so you can join servers that are not updated and your server will still allow users that have not updated. It can connect to any Gamespy backend, so you’ll have an easy time finding what you need. Any mods will simply work out of the box as well(including Special Forces) this is your drop in replacement to get Battlefield 2 into 2026!”

The modder adds that exploits will be fixed, gameplay shall be improved and the “experience of BF2 on modern systems will be enhanced.”

Aside from bringing Battlefield 2 to more people, we hope this leads to more advanced mods, which is only a matter of time before it happens.

When it comes to the current and official entry in the franchise, Season 5 of Battlefield 6 is kicking off this coming week, and we have the schedule of the content rollout for the upcoming season.

For those looking for some classic Battlefield action unencumbered by microtransactions and whatnot, your chance is coming soon.
