With Activision confirming that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare won’t have a traditional Season Pass which has been the norm for the franchise for more than a decade, some might be wondering whether we’ll be getting any new maps at all, and whether they’d be free. Well, the short answer is: yes, and Activision just confirmed this Modern Warfare free maps thing today.

Must-See Modern Warfare Reading:

In a press release announcing the “Multiplayer Universe” reveal will take place this August 1, the publisher mentions Modern Warfare “seeks to unite the community” with cross-play (which has been announced before), and how the removal of the traditional Season Pass will help Infinity Ward deliver free maps, content and more post-launch! Here’s the full quote from the press release:

As players enlist in the heart-racing Modern Warfare story, multiplayer continues the experience as players head online into the ultimate playground for the global balance of power. Featuring unified progression across modes, Modern Warfareseeks to unite the community with plans to support cross-play across platforms and the removal of the traditional season pass in order to deliver a greater mix of more free maps, content and community events post-launch.

Another thing to note there is the mention.of “unified progression across modes.” It’s not explained in the press release (most likely will be talked about come August 1), but it seems to me that playing through Spec Ops will somehow help you progress in multiplayer and so on. Perhaps playing the single-player campaign will contribute something to it as well? Or maybe there’s going to be one specific character you’re logged into, and everything you do progresses that overall character or profile’s rank.

Let’s hope the promise of free maps in Modern Warfare are actually, y’know, free maps, and not the same maps but with different lighting which is what Treyarch has been doing for Black Ops 4.

Do you believe Infinity Ward will deliver on the promise of free maps for Modern Warfare or Activision won’t let them?
