Larian Studios commented on the possibility of adding new races in a Q&A with XboxOn during a Twitch stream. Writing Director Adam Smith was asked if we could see other races from D&D get added to the game. He had this to say in response:
Currently, we’ve not stopped updating the game. We’re going to carry on updating it. All I can tell you is that we do plan to do more updates, we’re not done yet.
We don’t have specific plans for new races at the moment, but we’re not saying no.
While it’s not a firm commitment, it’s definitely still on the table. There are already some great mods that add more races to the game, but to have official support for these races would be awesome. Hopefully, we’ll see them added eventually.
On another note, with Baldur’s Gate 3 now available on Xbox, some might be waiting to see whether the game hits Game Pass before giving it a go. If so, you’re going to be waiting for a long time. The action-RPG is not headed for Xbox’s Game Pass anytime soon according to Larian Studios. The recent Game of the Year winner still has more content on the way, and the team also has not ruled out the possibility of adding more D&D races to the game.
The Game Pass news comes by way of an extensive interview IGN conducted with several members of Larian’s team. When asked how much Xbox offered Larian to put Baldur’s Gate 3 on their gaming subscription platform, Larian CEO Swen Vincke had this to say:
Oh, we always said from the get-go, it wasn’t going to be on Game Pass, it’s not going to be on Game Pass…. So look, we are in the business of making a game that has a beginning, middle, and an end. We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it’s a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games.
Larian clearly has no plans as of now for Baldur’s Gate 3 to join Xbox’s extensive Game Pass library. Still, you never know what the future holds.
