Bungie Day Celebrates Destiny Players With Year-One Recap Video & Developer Discussion

The 7th day of every 7th month marks a special occasion once a year that celebrates the players who play games made by renown developer Bungie. With festivities traditionally centered around the legendary Halo franchise, this July 7th in particular celebrates the budding community that has grown around the studio’s new IP, Destiny.

In a post on the recently updated Bungie.net, the veteran developer acknowledged the (almost one) year that old and new fans have had to build new memories around Bungie’s brave new world. This special year-one recap video, below, showcases a broad range of fan sentiment, be it video commentary, livestream highlights, musical covers, or cosplay projects compressed into 31 minutes of footage.

Additionally, this just-released developer round-table interview, presented by PlayStation and hosted by Wil Wheaton, presents a conversation between Bungie Co-Founder Jason Jones, Design Director Luke Smith, Senior Environment Artist Jason Sussman, and Technical Art Director Ryan Elli about Destiny’s first foray into wild.

Lastly, the studio also revealed the requirements for the additional year-one reward that was briefly touched upon in Bungie’s last Weekly Update. Veteran players will need to complete the following by September 9 in order to earn a special “Laurea Prima” emblem that will commemorate your legendary status.

  • Apprentice of Light – Reach the maximum level (level 20) with a character
  • Light of the Garden – Defeat the dark heart of the Black Garden

Bungie closed their report with this note to their fans:

You are legendary. If you’ve created a Guardian in our world, you have made the game of Destiny better. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to play alongside you this year. You’re the reason why we do what we do.

Happy Bungie Day, Guardian. And Happy Bungie Day to every player who has ever lent a bit of themselves to something that we created.

We have more adventures in store for Destiny in the months and years to come. We hope you’ll be along for the ride. It just wouldn’t be the same without you.

See you Starside,

Love, Bungie.

In related news, Sony also celebrated the occasion with their own announcement of a limited edition Destiny: The Taken King-themed 500GB PlayStation 4 console. It sports a “map of the cosmos” design “in silver with the Guardian’s crest set in gold right in the center” and comes with the Destiny Legendary Edition, which includes Destiny, Expansion I, Expansion II, and The Taken King. It will be available on September 15.

You can find out more about the bundle here, though pricing has yet to be announced.

Happy Bungie Day!
