EA CEO Admits Battlefield 2042, BFV Underdelivered, “A Lot of Work” to Do With Franchise

While Battlefield fans might feel a bit disappointed at Battlefield 2042, it’s important to note that BF2042’s shortcomings sting a little bit more given its predecessor, Battlefield V, also underwhelmed gamers when it was released. While gamers might feel that way, take comfort that EA’s head cheese, CEO Andrew Wilson, feels the same way too.

Speaking in a Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology talk, Andrew Wilson admitted that both games underdelivered, and that there is a lot of work to be done on the franchise. However, he also believes that with the right creative team, it can be turned around. Wilson even compares this to the Star Wars franchise when it comes to reinvigorating the fanbase.

I don’t think we delivered in the last 2 iterations of that in the way that we should have. There’s a lot of work that we’ve got to do there. But at its very core, this extraordinary IP. And what we’ve seen in the world of entertainment is great IP is resilient. And we’ve seen movies not live up to the expectations of franchises. Star Wars might be one such franchise. And then you can see what happens when you get the right creative team involved, how they can completely reinvent and grow a franchise. And I think we have an extraordinary creative team involved in Battlefield now who have unbelievable ambitions to own the first puts and shoot space, particularly as it feels to creation. – Andrew Wilson, EA CEO

Speaking of the right creative team, EA has announced that the next Battlefield game will feature a full-fledged campaign, and it’s being helmed by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto and his newly formed EA first-party studio, Ridgeline Games.

I’m honestly glad that EA’s own big boss knows that the games didn’t deliver. Hopefully, he means on the gameplay side and not just when it comes to sales. Mind, EA has to make things right again without “Mr. Battlefield” Lars Gustavsson given his recent departure, which will be no small feat.

All they had to do was make Battlefield 4.5, that’s all Battlefield fans wanted.

Instead they had to chase trends and try to turn Battlefield into a hero shooter going against it’s identity that fans loved.

After being a die hard battlefield player since 3, I can say I am done with the franchise. They have been making battlefield substantially worse since Hardline, which was extremely underrated and monumentally better than every steaming pile of crap they have released since. Battlefield is officially dead and almost ever OG Dev has already abandoned ship. 2042 is what happens when you bring in new blood and only care about money. The CEO should have said “yeah we rushed this dumpster fire. Yeah we played fake gameplay vids to make more money. Yeah we promised our fans all this stuff and spit in their faces.” If you plan on following them to their next game, you need a mental health check or you have more money than brains. I prefer not to throw away another $100+ on a failing game again. You would be stupid to put more money into their pockets.
