FBC: Firebreak Can Be Enjoyed to Its “Fullest,” Even If You Skipped Control, Claims Remedy

While Remedy Entertainment is mostly known for crafting single-player games that rely on a rich narrative experience to rope in players, that’s about to change with FBC: Firebreak, the studio’s first multiplayer-driven co-op game that’s set to be released in summer this year.
In case you didn’t know, FBC: Firebreak ties directly to Control’s world (and by extension, Alan Wake’s). But what if you haven’t played Control or any of the Alan Wake games? Will FBC: Firebreak still make sense?
Remedy Assures Gamers Knowledge About Control and Alan Wake Not Needed to Enjoy FBC: Firbreak at Its “Fullest”
Speaking to MP1st in an exclusive interview, we asked Remedy whether they’re planning to include a wrap-up or primer video for FBC: Firebreak players to catch them up to the game’s lore established in Control.
MP1st: How is Remedy looking to rope in new players who haven’t played Control or Alan Wake? Will there be a primer video of sorts in-game, or will players be able to understand everything that’s happening even without proper knowledge of the Control universe?
Mike Kayatta, Game Director, states, “You definitely don’t need to have played Control or Alan Wake to understand the world of FBC: Firebreak. And that’s not because we try to catch players up on those events through summaries or exposition – you can enjoy everything in this game to its fullest without ever knowing those stories. So, it’s been less about onboarding those folks and more about making sure that the space and time we’re exploring in Firebreak is self-contained. As for explaining important concepts like the Hiss, the FBC, and the Oldest House itself, we tackle that organically on a case-by-case basis.”
That’s very good to hear — especially for gamers who want to jump into FBC: Firebreak fresh and not have to deal with story points that’s not presented in-game. Of course, those who did play Control, expect to see familiar faces and places to be part of Firebreak’s story.
