Fortnite remains one of the most popular battle royale games even after many years, but Epic Games says the current situation is different from what it was a decade ago.

Because of this, the price of V-Bucks in Fortnite will increase starting March 19, a change the company says is directly related to operating costs.

Andre Balta, Senior Director of Ecosystem Growth at Epic Games, spoke about the price increase during GDC 2026 in an interview with The Verge. He explained that the decision was mainly about the cost of running the business.

Balta also said that Epic Games will continue focusing on new content and gameplay experiences, even though the company had to raise prices.

He explained, “I think what we put out publicly is pretty accurate. It’s pure operating costs of running a business, and that was the main push. We’re going to continue to, as a business, focus on creating amazing games and gameplay, but the price hike is a direct correlation to the operating costs.”

According to Balta, the explanations Epic Games has shared publicly are “pretty accurate.” His comments match what Steve Allison, the general manager of the Epic Games Store, said earlier. Allison suggested that the company is continuing to expand Fortnite and invest in its ecosystem.

He also hinted that players may better understand the decision once future updates are released. He said, “We’re just investing in growing the ecosystem a lot. There are a lot of amazing things that’ll be rolling out in the next, like, 6 to 12 months that, I think, when you look back, you’ll understand what’s been going on.”

Even so, the price change has not been well received by some players. For example, the $8.99 pack will now give 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000.

However, Epic Games has also announced some positive news. Fortnite: Save the World will become free on April 16, and the mode is also confirmed to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2.
