Future Yakuza Games Will be Turn-Based After Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s Success

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

The future of Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio’s Yakuza games will be turn-based moving forward, as series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, and producer Kazuki Hosokawa confirm that the franchise will be sticking to that gameplay style after Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s success.

Speaking with IGN while talking about the series, Nagoshi and Hosokawa explained why the series has transformed more into an RPG style game.

“The Yakuza series has been transformed into a turn-based RPG. On the other hand, over the year, Ryu ga Gotoku Studio has accumulated resources and know-how of making flashy and exhilarating action games that are effortless to enjoy. We decided that we should let our signature action gameplay live on through Lost Judgement.”

The Judgement series is a spin-off franchise that still retains the fun action gameplay that made the earlier Yakuza games so beloved by fans. Read our review about that here, and just recently its sequel Lost Judgement was announced — and it be coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One on September 24.
