[Updated] Introducing Star Citizen, an “Exciting New Space Epic From Legendary Game Designer Chris Roberts”

Update

Chris Rorberts’ Star Citizen Kickstarter project has reached it’s goal of raising $500,000 in funds with still 25 days left to go!

Original Story

From the man who brought you classic space combat simulaors like Wing Commander, Strike Commander, Wing Commander: Privateer, Starlancer and Freelancer, Game Designer Chris Roberts unveils his latest multiplayer space epic powered by the CryEngine 3, Star Citizen.

“Star Citizen brings the visceral action of piloting interstellar craft through combat and exploration to a new generation of gamers at a level of fidelity never before seen,” as described on Roberts’ Kickstarter page.

A massive universe to explore

“At its core Star Citizen is a destination, not a one-off story. It’s a complete universe where any number of adventures can take place, allowing players to decide their own game experience. Pick up jobs as a smuggler, pirate, merchant, bounty hunter, or enlist as a pilot, protecting the borders from outside threats. Chris Roberts has always wanted to create one cohesive universe that encompasses everything that made Wing Commander and Privateer / Freelancer special. A huge sandbox with a complex and deep lore allowing players to explore or play in whatever capacity they wish. That universe is Star Citizen.”

Roberts goes into further detail in this video introduction below.

Judging by some of the footage, Star Citizen already looks well on its way to becoming a hotly anticipated reality. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t contribute to its goal of raising $500,000 in funds, which it is quickly approaching –  $481,379, at the time of writing, with 26 days left to go.
