It appears that fans hoping for Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3 will have to wait a little longer. Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has tweeted that the next NetherRealm Studios game announcement will happen in “due time,” as the focus right now is the 30th anniversary event (MK30) for the Mortal Kombat series. Thankfully, this confirms that underwhelming bundle we reported on before isn’t the only thing we’re getting for the franchise’s anniversary.

Read the statement below:

Boon has also put any rumors of a new game announcement during to rest, stating that any such announcement will be “separate” from MK30.

Despite the studio’s hesitation to discuss the futures of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, it’s reasonable to assume that at least a new Mortal Kombat is currently in development.

Last summer, NRS announced that they’d stopped development on Mortal Kombat 11 in favor of their next project:

NetherRealm is now focusing on its next project and after more than two years of supporting Mortal Kombat 11, DLC for the game, including characters, has come to an end.

Journalist Jeff Grubb claimed in the following August that NRS was prioritizing the development of the next Mortal Kombat over a new Injustice game, due to the studio’s conflicts with parent Warner Bros. Games.

Not only that, files most likely related to Mortal Kombat 12 were seen on the workstation of senior NRS staff back in January.

And finally, Andrew Bowen, the actor for Johnny Cage, shared a since-deleted video of himself at the Warner Bros. lot in June:

The video features music and dialogue from the movie Bloodsport, which served as direct inspiration for the Mortal Kombat series.

Only time will tell what Ed Boon and NRS have in mind, though.
