Nintendo Confirms Next Console Will Be Compatible With Switch Games
Good news for Nintendo Switch owners and gamers in general: Nintendo has confirmed that its next console, which most have dubbed as “Switch 2” will indeed play Switch games.
It’s been long rumored, but today, Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa officially confirmed (via X) that Switch games will be playable on their next gaming console.
Switch 2 Games Will Be Playable on Its Successor
“This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”
This backwards compatibility confirmation lines up with a peripheral maker’s earlier claims that the Switch successor will feature backwards compatibility with not only games, but even controllers too.
This is fantastic news, as I am sure many of you have a pretty big library of games that you hope will carry over to the next console. Traditionally, Nintendo consoles wouldn’t support any kind of backward compatibility between generations, meaning if you wanted to keep playing your old games, you’d only be able to do so as long as you had the original console. Being able to keep and maintain your library on the next generation of consoles is an absolute win for everyone and a pretty surprising move from Nintendo, considering the views many have about them when it comes to old games.
When can we expect to see this console? Well, earlier today, Furukawa confirmed that they still planned to announce the new console sometime before March 2025, so anytime in the next four months. I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later, but even so, the wait won’t be very long before we finally get to see what the console manufacturer has been cooking.

I hope people aren’t expecting a huge leap in power for this Switch 2. Higher ups at Nintendo has already said it is about the same leap in power from PS4 to PS4 Pro. This isn’t expected to be a ‘new generation’ Switch but a slightly more powerful one. Them saying this will run Switch games is them just reminding people it is more of a Switch Pro than a next gen overhaul.
