Phil Spencer: Starfield is Xbox’s “Most Played Next-Gen Exclusive;” Also Xbox and Bethesda’s Most Wishlisted Steam Game Ever

Phil Spencer Starfield

Bethesda’s new space epic Starfield launched in early access less than a week ago, and according to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer, Starfield is already the most played next-gen exclusive that Xbox has ever released. In an interview published this morning by CNBC, the Head of Xbox was asked if he believed that Starfield would be the type of game to push more console sales and Game Pass subscriptions. He stated the following in response:

Well, we’re definitely seeing huge demand for the game. Y’know, the game has just been in preview; we’ve had more players for any next-gen exclusive than we’ve had this generation all-up…. It’s the most wishlisted game we’ve ever had between Bethesda and Xbox on Steam. Just a lot of momentum, and big game releases are a lot of fun. It’s great to be part of it.

This is a pretty staggering metric for Xbox, especially considering that they released a mainline game in the Halo series just a couple years ago. It remains to be seen how intensely Starfield boosts console sales for the company. At time of writing, the game currently sits at a peak of 263,236 active players on Steam according to SteamDB. For comparison, Halo Infinite’s all-time peak player count sits at 272,586. It might only be a matter of time before Bethesda’s latest RPG powerhouse surpasses Halo’s stats.
