While gamers might be familiar with the term “AAA” (triple A) when it comes to games, the term “AA” (double A) isn’t used as much. AAA games refer to big-budget games like Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2, while AA games are in line with titles such as the studio’s in-development project, FBC: Firebreak.

If you’re sometimes confused how studios classify a game as AAA or AA, you’re not the only one.

Remedy Entertainment Explains AAA and AA Games

Speaking to MP1st in an exclusive interview, we asked the studio about the differences between AAA and AA games.

MP1st: Remedy has said FBC: Firebreak is AA. What constitutes a game to be classified as AA? Its launch sale price? Smaller team? I mean, we want to say the development budget, but those are almost always never made public.

Thomas Puha, Communications Director: “Good question. The whole AA and AAA “classifications”, what do those really mean?

For us it means the cost of the game’s development, meaning the budget, the development team size and the amount of content and features we ship on day 1. These are all intricately linked to each other.

Then there’s things like, we aren’t doing a lot of VO localized into lots of different languages, being more economical there, which is easier when you don’t have cut-scenes which are some of the most expensive things to do in video games. The aim as always is put out as great of a game as possible.”

We’re uncertain if other studios classify AA games the same as Remedy, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they did. While FBC: Firebreak might be classified as a AA game, that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less fun and engrossing. Based on our preview, Remedy is on the right track to pull off its first multiplayer-focused title when it releases in the summer of this year.

One advantage of not being a AAA game? FBC: Firebreak is promising great visuals, but it won’t need to run on a monster PC according to Remedy.
