Report: PSVR2 Production Goals Set at Two Million Units by March 2023

Despite no definite release date and price announcement, Sony reportedly has set PSVR2 production goals at two million units by March 2023. This is despite the fact that the original PSVR headset only managed to sell a million units eight months after launch.

VR headsets definitely sound exciting on paper, but game developers remain skeptical about their popularity. The Meta Quest 2, the most popular VR headset, has sold an estimated three million units, with nearly three million sold in the first quarter of availability. These massive numbers still falter in comparison to sales for a single AAA console title, let alone the entire console market which VR companies target.

With a Q4 2016 release, the original PSVR headset sold its first million units eight months into launch, and its lifetime sales amounted to a mere five million units by the end of 2019. Meanwhile, production for the PSVR2 reportedly began in September this year, and Sony plans to produce two million units by March 2023.

Sony seems to have something in mind with these goals, however.

The planned Q1 2023 release coincides with the expected relief in supply chain issues that have impeded PS5 availability since its launch. The PSVR2 headset requires a PS5 console. A focused marketing campaign in that period would thus drive customers to buy both the console and the headset in droves with no constraints.
