Sony and AMD Tease PS6, Coming in ‘Few Years’
Sony has released a new video where Mark Cerny, the PlayStation system architect, talks with AMD’s Vice President and General Manager, Jack Huynh, about the future of PlayStation through the collaboration between Sony and AMD, from Project Amethyst to PS6.
Project Amethyst is the name of the partnership between Sony and AMD focused on developing new AI and machine learning technologies to improve graphics and gameplay. It seems to focus on three key innovations that could become the foundation of PS6, or whatever the next generation of PlayStation will be.
AMD and Sony Tease PS6 Features Through Project Amethyst

While PS6 is never directly mentioned, the discussion clearly points to specific technologies that will define the next generation of PlayStation through this ongoing collaboration with AMD.
According to Cerny and Huynh, Project Amethyst mainly focuses on machine learning, which will likely become a major part of future consoles. This includes areas like resolution, upscaling, lighting systems, and simulation.
Reaching the desired results requires more than just raw hardware power. It needs a mix of traditional rasterization performance and acceleration powered by machine learning through neural units.
The three main features highlighted in the video are:
- Neural Arrays
- Radiance Core
- Universal Compression
The first feature, Neural Arrays, lets compute units team up to process large chunks of the screen at once, boosting efficiency and enabling next-gen upscaling and denoising. Building on that, Radiance Cores are dedicated hardware blocks for unified light transport, handling ray tracing and path tracing in real time to enhance cinematic lighting and reflections. Finally, Universal Compression works across all data sent to memory, reducing bandwidth use, improving frame rates, and increasing overall GPU efficiency.
Together, these three technologies aim to boost hardware performance while reducing power use and workload on both CPU and GPU.
Cerny also commented on the early stage of these developments, saying: “Overall, it’s of course still very early days for these technologies, they only exist in simulation right now, but the results are quite promising and I’m really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years’ time.”
This statement strongly hints that Sony and AMD are already laying the groundwork for PlayStation 6, which could arrive within the next “few years.”
In other news, former PlayStation CEO Shawn Layden recently discussed the possibility of the PS6 launching without a disc drive, stating that this would be challenging for Sony due to various market factors.

2027 incoming! I just hope they figure out how to avoid scalpers this time around. It seems the Switch 2 did a good job of providing enough units alongside restricting online sales to wait lists, authenticated accounts and other methods.
