Sony CEO: We Don’t Need to “Aggressively” Sell as Many PS5 Consoles Right Now; Focus Is on Recurring Revenue for Current User Base
With news of Sony’s digital-only plans not really accepted with open arms by the gaming community, this might translate to sluggish sales of the PS5.
Even if that’s the case, it seems Sony isn’t that worried about it — at least for the time being.
This was something Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned publicly in a recent interview.
Sony CEO Focused on Monetizing Current PS5 User Base
Speaking in a video interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki was asked about the current memory crisis happening globally and how this affected the PS5’s sales.
Totoki was also asked whether he felt Sony was lucky that this was happening when Sony already has 90+ million units sold and is well into its console lifecycle.
Totoki answered, “It is lucky, you know, we are in the latter half of the lifetime cycle of a PS console. That means that we do not need to aggressively sell the console today. And rather than that, we’re focusing on recurring revenue from the current, you know, the user base.”
In addition to that, Totoki mentioned how PlayStation Plus has more than 125 MAU’s (Monthly Active Users).”
Given how the current memory shortages don’t seem to be ending anytime soon, Sony’s strategy on this might be the best course of action.
The main issue for Sony and gamers alike is how this current memory crisis will affect the PS6 and its pricing. While Sony hasn’t officially announced the PS6 or when we can expect it, chief competitor Xbox is already talking about its next-gen console, and you can bet that whenever they release, Sony will surely want to push its own next-gen device close to it.
While Sony hasn’t said anything concrete about the PS6’s tech specs and whatnot, the company did confirm that they do not have a timetable or price for the next-gen console just yet. However, the company also mentioned how it’s “unrealistic” for it to absorb “all component price increases,” suggesting that the next-gen console will be priced a lot higher given gamers will bave to shoulder a large chunk of the rising memory cost.
