Sony: PSVR2 Is Wired for Optimal Performance; Looking at Wireless Possibilities

PlayStation Vr 2 Wireless

The PlayStation VR 2 is set to release in a couple of months, and according to Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s SVP of Platform Experience, there’s a good reason why it’s not a wireless VR headset.

In an interview with Famitsu, Nishino stated that the PSVR2 remains wired like its predecessor, the PSVR, so that the device can maximize its performance:

We also understand that going wireless will give you another experience, so we’re always looking at all possibilities and doing technical research. However, there is still the issue of how far the cable solution can be replaced with a wireless one in terms of performance.

Wireless VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 2 are incredibly immersive thanks to the lack of any sort of cable, but they’re not as fun to use when connecting wirelessly to a PC. The connection can introduce latency, be prone to stability issues, and result in a worse experience overall. Until VR technology advances far enough that wireless and wired headsets are indistinguishable, it looks like Sony’s going to stick with what performs best, even if that means having to deal with a cable connected to your headset.

The PlayStation VR 2 is expected to launch on February 22, 2023.
