Square Enix Montreal has now been rebranded to Onoma. In a new blog post, the developer explained the reason behind this rebrand, and how they ended up with the name “Onoma.” They explain how Onoma is Greek for “name” and that names offer “endless possibilities.”

This rebrand follows a couple of months after Embracer Group acquired the studio. In the new post, the company talks about how a “Rebrand Squad” was created as soon as they were acquired to “bring their story to life.” The full post goes in-depth about the rebranding process and how more than 100 names were considered until they finalized on Onoma.

Square Enix Montreal was acquired by Embracer Group alongside Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal in a deal worth $300 million that was completed back in August. Embracer Group also announced that they’re acquiring IP rights for “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” in the same month.

We hadn’t heard much from the companies ever since they were acquired until now. Hopefully we’ll get to see what Studio Onoma is working on sometime soon.
