Stellar Blade 2 to Be Published by Shift Up Instead of Sony for a More Broad Global Reach
Given Stellar Blade’s success, it’s not surprising to hear that developer Shift Up is already deep in development of its sequel.
While the first entry in the franchise was published by Sony, that won’t be the case for the sequel, which we’re guessing will be called Stellar Blade 2.
The studio gave an explanation as to why they are self-publishing, and it does make a lot of sense, and it’ll probably make a lot of non-PlayStation gamers happy.
Stellar Blade 2 Will Most Likely Be Released on Multiple Platforms at Launch
In Shift Up’s latest quarterly earnings report, the Q&A portion asked about the direction of the company’s expanding publishing business.
Shift Up’s statement confirmed they are self-publishing the next Stellar Blade and this is to widen the game’s reach. “We intend to self-publish (first-party service) both the next <Stellar Blade> title and UNBOUND’s titles. To support this, we are continuously bringing on board global talent with experience in launching and operating major titles worldwide. The opportunity to directly publish the next <Stellar Blade> and UNBOUND titles on a global scale is proving to be a compelling draw for top industry professionals, enabling us to rapidly strengthen our in-house publishing capabilities,” the answer said.
Given the success of Stellar Blade, I don’t blame Shift Up for choosing to self-publish the sequel since this also meant they can release the game on any platform that they want, and when they want.
Stellar Blade was released on April 26, 2024, on the PS5, and was made available on PC on June 11, 2025. To date, there’s been no inkling that the game will ever reach the Xbox Series X|S or Switch platforms, which means millions of untapped customers.
Shift Up choosing to release Stellar Blade 2 on other console platforms is nothing new, as just a few months ago, the studio talked about it, and even a job listing from last year mentioned how Shift Up is looking to release the game on multiple consoles.
