The Blood of Dawnwalker Magic Will Be “Less Flashy” Than in Other Fantasy Games, Romanceable Characters Confirmed
[summaraize]
In Rebel Wolves’ upcoming dark fantasy RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, players will be playing half-human, half-vampire protagonist Coen. Given the reveal trailer showed us some of the supernatural things Coen can do, some might be expecting the character to be able to wield fireballs and other kinds of magic as we’re accustomed to in other RPGs.
That won’t be the case with The Blood of Dawnwalker, as the developers have confirmed that magic in the game will be “less flashy.”
Don’t Expect Fireballs and Lightning Bolts From Coen in The Blood of Dawnwalker
In a Discord FAQ published by Rebel Wolves, the studio confirmed quite a few things and one of that is how magic is used in the game. The developers state, “Our magic is less flashy than that used in pure fantasy settings, and quite rare. It revolves around the occult — rituals, amulets, relics, and summonings, rather than fireballs or lightning bolts.”
The studio also confirmed that Dawnwalker will be a “narrative sandbox” rather than a linear game. “The story is totally nonlinear, it’s what we call “a narrative sandbox”. Each playthrough will be different, as the world changes based on your choices – not only direct ones, but also indirect. Your actions (or inactions) will matter too.” per Rebel Wolves.
If you’re unfamiliar with the term narrative sandbox, Rebel Wolves explains, “It means putting as much control over the narrative as possible into players’ hands; putting a maximum emphasis on player’s agency and freedom to explore storylines with one clear goal but many, many ways to achieve it.”
The Blood of Dawnwalker Will Have Romance Mechanics Confirmed
The developers also confirmed that we’ll be seeing romance in the game. Given that most action-RPGs have romance options as almost a staple for the character’s growth within the game, we weren’t exactly surprised by this, though it’s still nice to see it confirmed nonetheless.
Rebel Wolves confirm that “yes,” there will be romanceable characters, but more about that will be shared as they get closer to release.
Other notable tidbits revealed by the devs in the FAQ confirm that Coen is not a vampire, nor is he fully human, but a dawnwalker, which is explained as “Dawnwalkers look like regular humans during the day, but turn into vampires after dusk. However, they are neither humans nor vampires—but something in between.”
One key difference between the game and almost every vampire game/movie we’ve seen is how humans are turned into vampires. In movies and in games, vampires usually bite a human (preferably on the neck) to turn them into one of the undead. In Dawnwalker, vampires need to pull their fangs and insert it into a human’s heart to turn them, which sounds way more gruesome and brutal.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is being developed by former CD Projekt RED devs under a new studio named Rebel Wolves. While there’s no release date yet, it is confirmed to be available on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
