Ubisoft Largely Confirms Rumors of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team’s Disbandment
Ubisoft recently responded to rumors about the disbanding of the team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. According to these rumors, the development team was no longer working together after the game failed to meet sales expectations.
In a statement to Eurogamer, Abdelhak Elguess, senior producer of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, largely confirmed these claims but made it clear that that no staff cuts were made. Instead, the developers at Ubisoft Montpellier have moved on to work on different projects within the company.
Elguess said, “I’m extremely proud of our team’s work and passion at Ubisoft Montpellier to create a game that resonated with players and critics alike, and I am confident in its long-term success.” He also confirmed that post-launch content, including three free updates and one DLC, concluded in September.
While Ubisoft has not officially confirmed or denied the potential for a sequel, they are currently focused on the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, which has been announced and delayed multiple times, though it seems to be moving forward after reaching an “important internal milestone” last year, indicating that development is progressing well.
Ubisoft’s challenges extend beyond Prince of Persia, as the company has been facing challenges with several recent releases. Star Wars Outlaws sales didn’t meet expectations, and games like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows have been delayed. On top of all this, there are reports that Tencent, along with Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family, might be looking into taking Ubisoft private.
Despite these difficulties, Ubisoft reassured fans that the Prince of Persia franchise isn’t going anywhere, with Elguess adding that the game recently launched on Steam and will be available on Mac this winter.
For now, players can enjoy the existing content and look forward to what Ubisoft has planned next. MP1st’s review of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown gave it a score of 9 out of 10, stating, “Taking Prince of Persia and mixing it with the Metroidvania genre was a brilliant move, as the gameplay and abilities from the series mesh very well with this style.”
