Gears of War: E-Day Pulled From PS5 Last-Minute Rumors Are “Untrue” Claims Xbox VP; But Yanked Trailer Says Otherwise

It’s been one heck of a weekend for both PlayStation and Xbox fans when it comes to game exclusivity.

While initial reports surfaced that Gears of War: E-Day would be released on the PS5, Microsoft’s XBOX division surprised everyone by confirming that Gears of War: E-Day will be a console exclusive to the Xbox Series X|S. Not only that, but XBOX further hammered the point home by confirming that this isn’t timed exclusivity either, as they have no plans to port it to the PS5.

What’s interesting here is that it’s been mentioned that E-Day being pulled from PS5 was a last-minute decision, and this is something Microsoft has denied, but people aren’t convinced that it was.

Gears of War: E-Day Trailer Featured a PS5 Logo Until It Didn’t

On gaming forum ResetEra, sleuths there discovered that in a post-reveal  podcast for E-Day, Microsoft ran the gameplay video that was shown at the XBOX Games Showcase, but it seems someone forgot the memo that it was a console exclusive, as the trailer aired had the PS5 logo (it was shown at the 25:33 mark).

Microsoft has since made the video private, though not before people managed to screenshot it:

Here’s where it gets a bit more interesting. Over on X (formerly Twitter), Aaron Greenberg, VP of Games Marketing at XBOX, replied to a tweet claiming that Microsoft changed E-Day to be an Xbox exclusive at the last minute and said, “Hey Tom, I can confirm this is not true. We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase.”

When asked “what’s not true,” Greenberg doubled down stating, “It is not true that it was a last minute decision,” and when pressed on when the decision to make it a console exclusive was made, Greenberg answered, “A lot has changed since Asha came into role 107 days ago. We are moving fast and it’s frankly pretty energizing inside the hallways here. I was made aware of these exclusives roughly a month in advance. Hope that helps!”

Needless to say, people are not convinced. One person pointed out how Greenberg said they knew it a month in advance, yet no one removed the PS5 logo in the video.

Another person reminded everyone that Greenberg commented about console exclusivity on Starfield and how the RPG is now available on PS5.

Of course, it’s not just Greenberg who gets to decide on these things, so it’s understandable how things change. That said, based on the trailer that had the PS5 logo, it doesn’t seem like Gears of War: E-Day being pulled from PS5 was really a last-minute thing. Then again, what do I know, right?

While Gears of War: E-Day won’t be making its way to PS5 anytime soon, a lot of other Xbox-published games like Halo: Campaign Evolved, Senua, Fable and more are, and we’re left wondering which game next will be made available on multiple consoles in the future.

Do you think Gears of War: E-Day’s console exclusivity was something Microsoft and the XBOX division planned at the last minute or not? Sound off in the comments.

Gears of War: E-Day will be released on the Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 6.
