Steam Machine Costs More Than a PS5 Pro But Can’t Reach 30 FPS in Some Demanding Games
Valve recently revealed the price and launch date of Steam Machine, which will start at $1,049. But despite its premium price tag, questions are already being raised about its ability to run some demanding games.
Early testing suggests the system has trouble handling graphically demanding games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong.
While this could end up being similar to the situation with Steam Deck, where Valve gradually verifies and optimizes games over time, the first results are not encouraging.
Steam Machine Struggles With Demanding Games Like Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong

According to technical analysis shared on X (formerly Twitter), Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 28 FPS at 1440p resolution with medium settings and ray tracing enabled. In Black Myth: Wukong, the game was tested at the same 1440p resolution with very high graphical settings, but performance dropped to just 20 FPS.
Another example is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Although the resolution was not mentioned, the game was tested using Ultra settings and reached only 21 FPS.
Another analysis from LTT Labs also claimed that God of War Ragnarok runs at 60 FPS on Steam Machine, compared to 75 FPS on PS5 and 110 FPS on PS5 Pro. However, the numbers may not be completely accurate.
The same source that shared these results concluded that, “Steam Machine’s performance does not match its price, a regular PC costing $1,049 or more would deliver significantly better results.”
Steam Machine has not had an easy journey since its reveal either. The hardware now appears less attractive due to ongoing component-related challenges that have affected the market in recent years.
Concerns have also been raised about its value, with the system costing more than a PS5 Pro while providing lower performance.
On top of that, the ongoing RAM supply issues are expected to affect available Steam Machine units, meaning stock levels could be lower than expected.
