Modern Warfare 4 Tout Review Scores, But Omits Xbox, Despite Microsoft Owning Call of Duty
After several years of mixed reactions from fans and critics, Call of Duty seems to have finally made a strong comeback.
The recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has become the highest-rated game in the franchise in 15 years, receiving some of the best reviews the series has seen in a long time.
Modern Warfare 4 Reviews Don’t Even Mention Xbox
Modern Warfare 4 currently holds a Metacritic score of 89 on PlayStation 5, 87 on Nintendo Switch 2, and 86 on PC, making it one of the best-reviewed Call of Duty games since 2011’s Modern Warfare 3, which received a score of 88. This is a major improvement for the franchise, especially after the poor reception of some recent entries.
Over on X (formerly Twitter), the official Call of Duty account proudly highlights Modern Warfare 4’s high Metacritic score. However, as you can see, the image doesn’t even mention Xbox at all.
It’s not because someone at Activision’s marketing team doesn’t like Xbox, no, not at all. It’s because Modern Warfare 4 still lacks an official Metacritic score on Xbox Series X|S. To put things in perspective: the Xbox version has only received two critic reviews, which is not enough to get an official Metascore.
Given that Microsoft owns Xbox and Call of Duty, it’s a bit funny to see this, since Microsoft can’t even use a game franchise it owns to push Xbox sales.
Going back to Modern Warfare 4, much of the praise has gone to the game’s single-player campaign, which many critics and fans consider one of the best in recent years. We also gave it a score of 9 out of 10, stating, “Modern Warfare 4 might just be one of the best Call of Duty when it comes to the campaign.”
Another important achievement for Modern Warfare 4 is its release on Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first time a Call of Duty game has appeared on a Nintendo console since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on the Wii U in 2013.
Alongside the positive reception of Modern Warfare 4, the Call of Duty franchise has now surpassed $40 billion in total revenue. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40B in lifetime franchise revenue. An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us.”
In other news, Xbox is replacing players’ custom backgrounds with Modern Warfare 4 ads, but thankfully, there’s a simple way to turn them off.
