Alan Wake 2 “Playable From Start to Finish,” Control 2 Now in Proof-of-Concept Stage

alan wake 2 release

In its Q4 2022 financial report, Remedy Entertainment has provided progress updates on a number of its upcoming titles. Most prominently, Alan Wake 2 is in “full production” and is now “playable from start to finish,” while Control 2, announced last November, has progressed into the proof-of-concept stage.

While total revenue and operating profits in Q4 2022 and the full year declined by 31.2% and 2.5% respectively from comparable periods, Remedy attributes these results to co-financing most of its upcoming projects and the strength of the comparable periods from 2021. It also predicts further decline in revenue in 2023 due to the development costs it is covering itself, but is hopeful that these will be justified by increased royalty potential from these titles in future years.

Remedy also provided updates on the development status of its five upcoming titles:

  • Alan Wake 2 will soon “have all content in place,” and is now fully playable “from start to finish.” The team will polish and optimize the title afterwards, and expects that Alan Wake Remastered will generate royalties through drawing new players as the release of Alan Wake 2 approaches in 2023.
  • Control 2, developed and published in collaboration with Control publisher 505 Games, now has detailed “game vision” ideas as well as gameplay, narrative, and art concepts. As of January 2023, the project has moved into the proof-of-concept stage.
  • The Control spinoff service-based game Codename Condor, also a collaborative project with 505 Games, remains in the proof-of-concept stage due to Remedy’s inexperience with the format and the logistics of initiating development on the title.
  • Codename Vanguard, co-financed and published with Tencent, has been kept in the proof-of-concept stage since Fall 2022, with significant development team expansion postponed until 2023. The core gameplay and meta game are the current focus of development, as well as the application of Remedy-style narrative and worldbuilding to the game. The development team has been “strengthened by select key hires.”
  • The Max Payne 1 & 2 remake remains in the concept stage, though “good progress” has been made on the project.”
